AEDM Day 12: Landscape Exercises

I have it in my head that I do not like drawing/painting landscapes, and that I suck at it. After spending a bit of time with one of Claudia Nice‘s books on nature drawing, I decided to give it another shot.

I’m not sure it’s entirely finished; part of what I liked about the scene was the whiteness of the bare tree against a darker bank of trees. I may darken up that area some and see if it makes the tree pop out more.

I was trying too many new things at once: trying to capture texture in ink; using masking fluid for the first time; and of course, anxiety-producing watercolors. I got impatient and didn’t let things dry enough in between steps, and rubbed a hole in the paper. But I’m happy with the texture in the white tree and in the foreground rocks, which is what I was really after anyway.
