I’ve been fasting, which has meant learning a lot about hunger. I’m too hungry, cranky and tired to elaborate further tonight.
Today I followed the admonition to “play with the art materials you’re afraid to use!” I have a stash of these expensive colored papers I never know what to do with. I love the dark, moody energy of this image, with the contrast of the bright yellow scarf saving it from being totally depressing. I’m […]
Semi-blind contour drawing done while looking in the mirror. I seem to be having a “thing” about extra-long chins this week.
IPad sketch of my mother Rita, from a 1960s photo. She would have been 74 today. She died at 58, not much older than I am now.
blind contour drawing colored on iPad watercolor There’s something I just love about blind contour drawing. It is the perfect marriage between controlling and letting go. My eyes travel so slowly and meticulously along the edges of my subject, my pen following right behind: a very controlled process. At the same time, I let go […]
Quick doodle based on this morning’s run. I love running in the dark. I love being the only woman awake, watching the day emerge. As I approached the park, I saw an unleashed dog alert to my presence. I have been chased by an unleashed dog in this very park before – perhaps this very […]
Took some of yesterday’s eye dropper faces and added watercolor. Watercolor is NOT my medium. I feel incompetent with watercolor…I think I subconsciously view it as a children’s medium, which makes my lack of skill even more frustrating. Of course, part of my problem is that I try to bend it to my will, which […]
These faces were created quickly with ink in a dropper, following a prompt in Carla Sondheim’s Drawing Lab. I am kind of a control freak so this very UNcontrolled method was unpleasant and anxiety-producing at first! Eventually I came to enjoy it and quite like a few of them; I will go at some of […]
In the spirit of my 2014 “I Dare Me!” challenge to do something new everyday, I just HAD to purchase this strange fruit that shared a shelf with rambutan and dragon fruit. It’s called Buddha Hand or Fingered Citron, and I have NO idea what to do with it…except photograph (and eventually draw) it!
