I have never been able to meditate in the sitting-crosslegged-on-a-cushion sort of way; I am way too fidgety and my muscles cramp up. I can, however, achieve that same quietness of mind through repetitive movement. Running, hiking, paddling can get me there. So can doodling, moving a pen or brush across paper without a specific […]

No one reads a comic strip because it’s drawn well. They read it because it makes them laugh! When I give a presentation about visual thinking tools, I ask folks to “raise your hand if you can draw.” Very few hands go up. If I asked that question in a kindergarten class, EVERY hand would […]
One of the things I love about Art Every Day Month is stealing learning from the other participants. I particularly enjoy Tobi Kibel Piatek’s prompts and exercises. Last night I played with the form she used in HER post yesterday.
Sometimes when we think about art and creativity we imagine that it takes a huge amount of time and materials, when really it is often about expanding the way we look at things and using everyday items in a different way. Today’s “creativity moment” literally took five minutes. However, I couldn’t have done this in […]
Don’t hire me…if keeping costs down is your primary concern. My rates aren’t the highest in the industry, but they’re not the lowest either. I bid by the project or event rather than by the hour so that we can focus on meeting your goals, not niggling on how many hours each component takes. Don’t […]
January’s theme for Creative Every Day is “lost and found.” To me, collage is the ultimate lost and found art form, transforming old magazines and cards and such into new images. I spent some time this weekend thinking about my New Year’s resolutions, turning them into a collaged cover for my sketchbook journal.
I gotta walk my talk. I spend a lot of time working with clients on thinking and working more creatively. In order to do that well, I need to keep my own creative juices flowing! I’ve signed up for the Creative Every Day challenge created by the same gal responsible for Art Every Day Month. […]
I had a great conversation with a potential new client/collaborator today and just had to doo a little doodle of joy. (I left their name out, though, since no contract has been signed yet!) Yesterday’s and today’s pieces were done in my tiny 4″ by 6″ sketchbook. I find this size the LEAST intimidating – […]
Took some of yesterday’s eye dropper faces and added watercolor. Watercolor is NOT my medium. I feel incompetent with watercolor…I think I subconsciously view it as a children’s medium, which makes my lack of skill even more frustrating. Of course, part of my problem is that I try to bend it to my will, which […]
A couple years ago I stumbled on Leah Piken Kolidas’ art blog. She’s created a month long creativity challenge, declaring November Art Every Day Month. Participants are invited to create art every day and share it with the rest of the community. In the past my participation has been somewhat sporadic (see my past entries […]
